Chapter 16: Spinal Cord And Spinal Nerves Flashcards
Spinal cord
- link between the brain and the rest of the body
- controls reflexes
- site for integration of neuronal stimulation
Spinal nerve functions
- pathway for sensory and motor impulses
-responsible for reflexes
Spinal meninges
Cover the spinal cord that excisions from the intervertebral foramina
Cerebral spinal fluid
Shock absorbing fluid in the spinal cord
Denticulate ligament
Thickenings of the pia mater that project and connect the arachnoid mater to the dura mater
Dura mater
- most superficial
- made of dense p, irregular connective tissue
Epidural space
- space between the dura mater and the walls of the vertebral canal
Arachnoid mater
- middle layer
- Avascular covering
- contain collagen fibres and some elastic fibers
Subdural space
- between the dura mater and the arachnoid
- contains interstitial fluid
Pia mater
- Inner most layer
- highly vascular, transparent connective tissue
- adheres to the surface of the spinal cord
- contains squamous and cuboidal cells within interlacing bundles if collage and elastic fibres
Gross anatomy of spinal cord: parts
Superior to inferior
- cervical
- thoracic
- lumbar
- sacral
- coccygeal
Conus medullaris
The tapering inferior me of the spinal cord
Cauda equine
“Hourses tail”
- axons that extend inferiorly from the spinal cords conus medullaris
Volume terminale
The strand of pia mater within cauda equina that attaches to the medullaris to the coccyx
Cervical enlargement
- Located in the inferior cervical part of the spinal cord
- inner areas the upper limbs
Lumbosarcal enlargement
- extends through the lumbar and sacral parts of the spinal cord
- innervates the Lower limbs
Grey matter
- unmyelinated axons and glial cells
Contains: - posterior horn
- lateral horn
- anterior horn
- gray commissure
White matter
Myelinated axons
Contains:
- posterior funiculus
- lateral funiculus
- anterior funiculus
Anterior horns
- Grey matter
- House somatic motor neurons
- Inner age skeletal muscles
Lateral horns
Grey matter
- contain motor neurons
- innervate cardiac muscles, smooth muscles, and glands
Posterior horns
- Grey matter
- sensory neurons and cell bodies of interneurons
- receive sensory information from the body
Gray commissure
Grey matter
- houses a narrow central canal
Posterior ramus
Innervates the deep muscles and skin of the back and posterior surface of the trunk
Anterior ramus
Innervates the anterior and lateral portions of the trunk and the upper and lower limbs
Rami
Communicates
Extended between the spinal nerves and the sympathetic trunk ganglia
Posterior/ doral root
Sensory
Anterior/ ventral root
Motor
Spinal plexus
Network of axons
