Chapter 15 Body Mechanics And safe Resident Handling, Positioning, And Transfers Flashcards
Base of support
The area on which an object rests
Body alignment
The way the head, trunk, arms and legs are aligned with one another; posture
Body mechanics
Using the body in an efficient and careful way
Dorsal recumbent position
See “supine position”
Ergonomics
The science of designing a job to fit the worker
Fowler position
A semi-setting position; the head of the bed is raised between 45 / 60 degrees
Friction
The rubbing of one surface against another
Lateral position
The person lies on one side or the other; side lying position
Left semiprone position
A lateral position in which the upper leg (right leg) is sharply flexed so it is not on the lower leg (left leg) and the lower arm (left arm) is behind the person. Used for rectal procedures
Logrolling
Turning the person as a unit, in alignment with one motion
Posture
See body alignment
Prone position
Lying on the abdomen with the head turned to one side
Shearing
When skin sticks to a surface while muscles slide in the direction the body is moving
Side-Lying position
See Lateral position
Supine position
The back lying position; dorsal recumbent position
Transfer
Moving the person from one place to another
Slings types
•standard full sling - used for normal transfers
• extended length sling - used for persons with extra-large thighs
•bathing sling - used to transfer the person directly from the bed or chair in to a bathtub. The sling is left in place and attached to the left during the bath.
• toileting sling - the sling bottom is open. For infection control, each person should have own toileting sling.
•Amputee sling - used for the person who has had both legs amputated (double amputee)
• Follow center policy and the manufacturer instructions for washing slings. Also follow center policy for handling and washing slings. A sling is contaminated if it:
• has any visible sign of blood, body fluids, secretions or excretion
• is used on a person bare skin
• is used to bathe a person
Using a mechanical lift
• you must be trained in it’s use
• you must be at least 18 years old of age
• it must be in good working condition
• the sling straps hooks and chains must be in good repair
• the person weight must not exceed the lift capacity
•At least two staff members are needed
There are different types of lifts!
Read each lift instructions!
Good body mechanics involves the following except
Having the job fit the worker
Good alignment means
Having the head, trunk, arms and legs aligned with one another
These actions are about body mechanics. Which action is NoT correct?
Hold object away from your body when lifting, moving or carrying them
You are turning a person in bed. Which action is not correct?
Keep the far bed rail down
Residents are repositioned at least every
2 hours
The back lying position is called
Supine position or Dorsal recumbent position
Breathing is usually easier in
Fowler position
A pillow is placed against the person back in
Lateral position
A persons skin rubs against the sheets. This is called
Friction
Which occurs when a person slides down in bed?
Shearing
Before Side-Turning a person, you
Move the person to the side of the bed where the back will be at
The Logrolling procedure
Is used after spinal cord injuries or surgeries
When getting ready to dangle a person, you need to know
Which side is stronger
For chair and wheelchair transfers , the person must
Wear nonskid footwear
When transferring the person to bed, a chair,or the toilet
The person strong side moves first
You are going to use a mechanical lift. You must do the following except
Use a transfer belt
To safety transfer a person with mechanical lift at least
Two workers are needed
These statements are about transfers to and from a stretcher? Which is false?
Once on the stretcher. The person can be left alone
Which of the following statements about mechanical lifts is incorrect?
If you know how to use one, you know how to use them all.
You are transferring John Lynn to a stretcher. Which is correct?
The stretcher side rails are kept up during transport
The bed is in the lowest horizontal position to give care
False
Using a lift sheet to move a person up in bed reduces shearing and friction
True
When transferring a person the weak side moves first
False/ strong side moves first
Proper positioning helps prevent pressure ulcers and contractures
True
