The idea that people are social beings who are effected by the cultures in which they live
What is the “Zone of Proximal Development” theory (Vygotsky)
Vygotskys term for the range of talks a child can carry out with the help of someone who is more skilled
What is “Scaffolding” (Vygotsky)
Vygotskys term for cognitive methods of solving problems to help children as they learn to function independently

the idea that we cannot understand a person without understanding their diversity (ethnicity, gender, etc)

A lifespan perspective of Indigenous peoples, it is not Hierarchical but Cyclical and is based on mother earths seasons

Positive: if one variable increases, so does the other
Negative: if one increases, the other decreases
What is the difference between an Independent Variable and Dependant Variable
Independant: variable that is manipulated
Dependant: the measured result

The same people are observed repeatedly over time and researchers record their changes in development

National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth
A Canadian survey that collects information on the factors that influence children’s social, emotional, and behavioural development
What are “Cross-sectional Studies”
Studying the developmental processes of different age groups at the same time
What is the “Cohort Effect”
a cohort is a group of people born at the same time and experience unique events according to their age group, which can be a challenge to cross-sectional research
ex. people who are 80 years old today grew up without TV
