Chapter 1 Flashcards
Study of structures of the body
Anatomy
Study of functions of the body
Physiology
Plane that splits body into right and left portions
Sagittal
Plane that splits the body equally into right and left portions
Midsagittal
Plane that splits body into anterior and posterior portion
Frontal plane
Plane that splits body into superior and inferior portions
Transverse plane
Body standing upright, with the feet at shoulder width and parallel, toes forward
Anatomical position
Describes a position above or higher than another part of the body proper
Superior
Describes a position below or lower than another part of the body proper; near or toward the tail
Inferior
Describes the front or direction toward the front of the body
Anterior/ventral
Describes the back or direction toward the back of the body
Posterior/dorsal
Describes the side or direction toward the side of the body
Lateral
Describes the middle or direction toward the middle of the body
Medial
Describes a position in a limb that is nearer to the point of attachment or the trunk of the body
Proximal
Describes a position in a limb that is farther from the point of attachment or the trunk of the body
Distal
Describes a position closer to the surface of the body
Superficial
Describes a position farther from the surface of the body
Deep
Towards the head
Rostral
Towards the tailbone
Caudal
Body in horizontal position with face down (on the belly)
Prone
Body in horizontal position with face up
Supine
Involves a decrease in the angle between the surfaces of articulating bones
Flexion
Involves an increase in the angle between the surfaces of articulating bones
Extension
Continuation of extension beyond anatomical position
Hyperextension
Movement of a bone away from the midline
Abduction
Movement of a bone toward the middle
Adduction
Movement of the forearm in which the palm is turned anterior
Supination
Movement of the forearm in which the palm is turned posterior
Pronation
Bending the foot in the direction of the upper surface
Dorsiflexion
Relative to the periphery or away from
Peripheral
Same side
Ipsilateral
Opposite sides
Contralateral
