Sebaceous Gland
oil producing glands (sebum); provides layer of moisture; oil is slightly acidic to discourage bacterial growth
Sweat Gland
sweat is 99% water, 1% salt and organic waste products
Hair and Nails
made of hard keratin
Functions of the Skin
protection- prevents pathogens from entering; UV rays; Physical Damage
helps maintain body temp (homeostasis) via perspiration
excretion- via sweat glands; organic waste
perception of stimuli; pain; temp; touch; pressure
Epidermis
outer most layer; contains melanocytes; made of soft keratin
Dermis
“true skin”; middle layer; contains (see diagram)
Hypodermis or Subcutaneous layer
deepest layer; contains lipocytes for insulation
What do cells of the epidermis do when they “get older”?
they slip off and new cells are generated
How does pimples or acne occur?
as the glands produce more oil and you don’t wash your face they (the pores) get clogged, then infected, then pimples or acne is made
Debridement
removal of damaged tissues and foreign debris to promote healing
Skin Graft
transplantation of skin from one person to another or from the same person; do debridement before a skin graft; there are holes in the skin grafts so skin can breath
Autograft
same person is the donor and the recipient of the graft
Dermatom
knife used in skin grafts
Biggest Fears of Burns
fluid loss (hypovolemic shock) and infection
What would you administer to burn patients?
IV fluids and antibiotics until they are no longer “leaking” fluid and fully recovered
Hypovolemic shock
Fluid loss through the tissue because of the burn; cardiovascular has lost so much pressure due to overcompensating for fluid loss in tissue that your body can no longer receive oxygen
