-trophy
condition of growth or development
voluntary muscle that is attached to bone, it has a striped appearance, composed of muscle fibers, long slender cells held together with connective tissue, covered in fascia
Skeletal muscle or striated muscle
involuntary muscle, surrounds internal organs, found throughout your respiratory tract, stomach, intestines, and urinary tract, contracts & releases to move contents through the body system passageways; known as _______- lets food move through the stomach & intestines, blood to the arteries & veins, and fetus through the birth canal
Smooth muscle or visceral muscle
called peristalsis
only found in the heart, unconsciously controlled, pumps blood from the heart to blood vessels, involuntary contracts
Cardiac muscle or myocardial muscle
What are the functions of muscles?
- holding body parts in position and making movement possible (just think holding and positioning)
- providing protective covering for the internal organs (just think protects organs)
- producing, through movement, nearly 85% of heat that keeps the body warm (just think provides 85% of heat)
- Aiding blood flow through the veins as blood returns to the heart
- moving food through the digestive system
- assisting with the movement of fluids through the ducts and vessels of other body systems
the ability of a muscle to contract without the involvement of nerve supply. Is a property of visceral, smooth, and cardiac muscles
Automaticity
the ability of skeletal muscle fibers to resume their resting length when a stretching force is removed, ex: when a spring is stretched then released returning back to its original position
Elasticity
the ability of a skeletal muscle to contract (shorten). ex: the biceps muscle contracts when the arm is flexed
Contractility
the ability of a skeletal muscle to receive and respond to a nerve impulse by contracting, ex: nerves send a message to the heart muscle and the heart pumps blood through the vessels throughout the body
Excitability
the ability of the skeletal muscles to be stretched, is evident in the hamstrings and calf muscles during a toe touch for example
Extensibility
a band or sheet of fibrous tissue that encloses a muscle or group of muscles
Fascia
