Ch. 7 Terminology Flashcards
The skeletal system is divided into what 2 groups?
Axial and Appendicular
How many total bones are in skeletal system and what groups are they in?
206 in total. 80 in axial and 126 in appendicular
What do the depressions and opening do?
Allow passage of soft tissues and form joints
OPENINGS
DEPRESSIONS
What is a process?
Projection from a structure
**Most of the time its an attachment site
What is a fissure?
A slit that allows a passageway of blood vessels or nerves
What is a foramen?
Hole for passage for blood vessels, nerves or ligaments
What is a Fossa?
A shallow depression
What is a sulcus?
Groove on bone for passage of blood vessel, nerve or tendon
What is a meatus?
Tube-like opening
What is a condyle?
Rounded projection with a smooth articular surface
What is an angle?
A bend
What is a ramus?
Branch off of the body beyond the angle
What is a Facet?
Smooth, flat, slightly concave articular surface
What is a Head?
Usually rounded articular process supported on a neck, enlarged and often rounded.
What is a neck?
Constriction between head and body
What is a crest?
Prominent ridge or elongated process
What is a Sinus?
Mucous membrane line air spaces
Tubercle
Rounded projection
*Most likely a tendon or liagment was attached during life
Where are the 4 sutures of the skull?
Coronal Suture - connects frontal bone to parietals
Sigittal suture - Connected parietals
Lambdoid suture - connects occiptial bone to parietals
Squamous Suture - Connects pariteal to temporal
What are the 14 facial bones?
(2) Zygomatic bones
(2) Maxilla bones
(2) Palatine bones
(2) lacrimal bones
(2) Nasal bones
(1) Mandible
(1) vomer
(2) Nasal conchae
What do the facial bones do?
Protect the major sensory organs located in face: eyes, nose, tounge
Also provide attachment for muscles controlling facial expressions associated with emotions and eye movements
Alveolar process
the thick ridge of bone which contains the tooth sockets
What bones make up the axial skeleton?
Everything along center axis of body
Skull, auditory ossicles, hyoid, vertebral column, and rib cage
What bones make up the appendicular skeleton?
Everything that makes up appendages including pelvic and pectoral girdles
What is an epicondyle?
Projection apon a condyle
What is a line?
Long narrow ridge or border / less prominent than a crest
What is a spinous process?
Sharp slender projection
What is a process?
Prominent projection
What is a Trochanter?
- Very large projection only found on femur
What is a tubercle?
Small rounded bump
What is a tuberosity?
Variably sized projection with a rough bumpy surface, larger than tubercle
How do you tell a right from left Scapula?
The glenoid cavity must be facing outward and the spine is posterior
How do you tell a right from left Humerus?
The head must be facing medial and the Olecranon fossa must be posterior
How do you tell a right from left Ulna?
The Trochlear notch is facing anteriorly and the radial notch is facing lateral
STYLOID PROCESS IS MEDIAL
How
How do you tell a right from left Tibia?
Tibial tuberosity is facing anteriorly and medial melleolus facing medial
How do you tell a right from left Femur?
Head faces medially and linea aspera is facing posteriorly
How do you tell a right from left Os Coxae?
The acetabulum faces laterally and the inferior pubic ramus faces medially
