Ch. 7 Complex Patterns of Inheritance Flashcards
genetic crosses involving 2 traits
dihybrid cross
XY and XX. determined by male since they carry both X and Y rather than XX. egg always carries and X. sperm can carry X or Y
sex determination
genes located on X or Y chromosome
sex linked genes
located on X chromosome. males are more likely to inherit recessive X linked diseases because they only have one X chromosome to be functional. female are less likely because they ave two X chromosomes, allowing them to have another dominant allele. only females can be carriers of recessively inherited traits.
X linked genes
hemophilia, red green colorblindness, muscular dystrophy
X linked diseases
gaurantees that females only get one dose of proteins produced by genes on one of the two X chromosomes. one chromosome is inactivated when a string of RNA is wrapped around it. random and irreversible
X inactivation
located on Y chromosome. father to sons
Y linked genes
triggers series of events that develops testes
SRY (Sex determining Region on Y chromosome)
family tree that follows inheritance of a genetic trait through many generations
pedigree
