What is an intransitive verb?
It does not take a direct object (Nautae nāvigant. “The sailors sail.”)
What is a transitive verb?
It takes a direct object (Rēgīna puellam accūsat. “The queen accuses the girl.” Helena est rēgina. “Helen is a queen.” In lūdō discimus. “We learn in school.”)
What is the special intransitive verb in Latin?
It is a special verb that takes a direct object in the dative case (not the accusative)
Translate the following sentence with a special intransitive verb:
Puella mātrī placet.
“The girl is pleasing to [her] mother.” [or]
“The girl pleases [her] mother.”
(notice that it is okay to sometimes use the “to” preposition when translating the dative with the special intransitive verb.)
Translate the following sentence with a special intransitive verb:
Deō parēbimus.
“we will be obedient to God.” [or]
“we will obey God.”
(notice that it is okay to sometimes use the “to” preposition when translating the dative with the special intransitive verb.)
How does Latin use the Dative case to show possession?
Dative word + a form of esse
In the Dative of possession + a form of esse; how should the form of esse be translated?
“to belong to” (not as “to be”)
Translate the following sentence that uses a Dative of possession:
Cōnsulī est officium.
“The office belongs to the consul.”
Translate the following sentence that uses a Dative of possession:
Discipulīs erant librī.
“The books belonged to the students.”
