Cell Division Flashcards
What does cell continuity state?
All cells develop from pre-existing cells.
What are the three steps to form a new cell?
- Produce materials it will need.
- Let the cell grow larger.
- Reproduce to form a new cell.
Where are chromosomes found?
They’re found in the nucleus.
What are chromosomes made up of?
DNA and protein
What are “chromosomes” called before they divide and what state do they hold?
“Chromosomes”, before they divide are known are chromatin and they are long thin thread-like structures.
What happens to the chromatin when the cell starts to divide?
Chromatin forms a numbers of clearly distinguishable Chromosomes.
How many chromosomes do humans have?
Humans have 46 chromosomes.
How many sets of chromosomes do haploid cells contain?
A Haploid cell has one set of chromosomes.
How are haploid cells notated?
They are notated as ‘n’. For example, a human haploid cell would be written as ‘n=23’.
How many sets of chromosomes do diploid cells contain?
A Diploid has two sets of chromosomes.
What are the pair of diploid pairs in a cell called?
They are called a homologous pair.
How are diploid cells notated?
They are notated as ‘2n’. For example, a human haploid cell would be written as ‘2n=46’.
What is the period between the cell dividing called?
It is called the interphase.
What is the period of cell dividing called?
It is called the Mitosis.
What percentage of the cells life is in Interphase?
90%
