What is mitral stenosis?
Characterized by valvular obstruction to flow from the left atrium to left ventricle
What is the most common cause of mitral stenosis?
Rheumatic heart disease
What are 3 symptoms of mitral stenosis?
exertional dyspnoea
hemoptysis (spitting blood)
chest pain
What are 5 signs of mitral stenosis?
mid-diastolic murmur atrial fibrillation mitral facies pulmonary hypertension right heart failure
What are 2 signs of pulmonary hypertension?
right ventricular heave
prominent a-wave
What is a heave?
if placed the heel of the hand over the left parasternal region. the heel of the hand is lifted off the chest wall with each systole
When is a mid-diastolic murmur heard?
After s2 and before s1 (during diastole)
What patients are given anticoagulation?
AF or
mitral stenosis
What type of drugs are mainly used for anticoagulation treatment?
vitamin k antagonist
