CAD Muscle and Skeletal Flashcards
What are the different divisions of the skeleton and which bones align with each division
Everything in the peripheral sense is appendicular and everything ventral is axial
What are the different joints
What are the things that you should consider with a muscle skeletal injury
MOI
History
Where the injury is
What determines if we should be doing a rapid trauma or medical assessment
MOI
What are some pneumonic for pain assessments
What are assessment for non traumatic brain injury
Look: Swelling, bruising, scars, shape abnormalities
Feel: Tenderness, sensation, palpate
OPQRST
history
Events
Neuro symptoms
Recent infections
What are some medical complaints for musculoskeletal issues
Bursitis
Osteoarthritis
Septic arthritis
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Other types of aches
What are some important considerations for Blunt trauma
Consider MOi
Complete a comprehensive secondary
Consider what forces
Was it a sudden impact?
What are some important factors for consideration in penetrating trauma
Where the injury has occurs (important vessels, organs, and structures)
Look for entry/exit wounds
What are the focused trauma assessments
How do we assess a C spine
Feel:
For midline tenderness of vertebrae from the base of the skull to the first T vertebrae
Any neck pain? and numbness or tingling anywhere? Pain elsewhere?
What are the Ottawa ankle and knee assessment
Knee:
Age 55 or older
Tenderness at head of fibula
Isolated tenderness at patella
Inability to flex 90 degrees
Inability to bear weight both immediately 4 steps)
Ankle:
Inability to bear weight both immediatley and in ED (4 steps)
Bone tenderness along the distal 6cm of the posterior edge of the fibula or tip of the lateral malleolus
Bone tenderness at the base of the fith metatarsal
Bone tenderness at the navicular bone
What is the special assessment for Achilles Tendon injuries
ask the patient to lie down on a stretcher or bed with feet hanging off the end and get them to relax.
Squeeze the unaffected calf muscle and observe plantar flexion
Squeeze the affected calf muscle and if the foot does not plantar flex the Achilles is ruptured
What are the signs and symptoms of musculoskeletal injuries
