Hemo week 1 Flashcards
What is the difference in the ICF and the ECF
ICF (intracellular fluid) is the largest compartment
it incorperates all fluids inside cells
it is stable in terms of volume
Extracelluar (ECF)
All fluids not inside the cell
Variable and constanly changing in the volumes
Broken down into 3 main catagories
Interstitial
Intravascular
Transcelluar
What is so special about transcellular fluid
This is the smallest part of the ECF
It is fluid that is contained within specialized spaces such as Pericardium, pleura, synovial joints
What are Electrolytes
These are molecules that conduct electricity when dissolved in water.
These can be + (cations) or - (Anions)
What do electrolytes do
They regulate the essential minerals and enzymes
Infuence osmosis
Maintain acid/base balance
Create action potentials for neuro transmission
How do cells use electrolytes and ions to move water
cells can use diffusion, facilitated diffusion or active transport to move these ions in or out of the cell
this movment of ions then changes the osmotic pressure accordingly helping water be moved in and out of the cell
