Q

What is the difference between ACE and ARB inhibitors

A

Ace inhibitors work to reduce or prevent the conversion of angiotensin 1 to angiotensin 2 (They prevent the formation of Angiotensin converting enzyme) This also prevents the formation of aldosterone.

ARD inhibitors antagonize or block the angiotensin II receptors, therefore prevent them from working. (Aldosterone is still made)

Q

What does a Beta blocker do

A

There are selective and non selective beta blockers

SELECTIVE beta blockers reduce chronotropic and inotropic effects to reduce HR

This decreases CO, which in turn reduces the pressure on the kidneys, ultimately reducing the release of renin

Q

What do calcium channel antagonists do?

A

These block calcium channels, which help reduce the contractility of the heart and smooth muscle

Q

What do Diuretics do?

A

These can come in many forms and work on different areas of the Kidneys. Essentially they promote more frequent urination

Q

What are the ‘First line of defence in dyslipidaemia?

A

These are medicines that end in STATIN

Other meds can be used but not usually seen in practice as commonly

Q

What is the difference between HDL & LDL

A

HDL (Hight Density Lipoprotein) is the Bad cholesterol that is associated with atherosclerosis

LDL (Low density Lipoprotien) are the ‘good’ cholesterol which transport cholesterol to the liver to be removed from the body

It is important to relise both of these types in higher concentration are BAD

Q

What are some anti anginal medicines

A

Organic Nitrates are vasodilators. Which vasodilates the vessels resulting in more oxygen supply, reducing the signs of ischemia.

Selective beta blockers

And non selective beta blockers

Calcium channel blockers can also be a first-line defense
