C6 - Electrolysis Flashcards
1
Q
Electrolysis
A
- Splits up Ionic Compounds, using electric current
- Positive Ions move to the Negative end
- Negative Ions move to the Positive end
2
Q
Electrolyte
A
- Dissolved Ionic Compound
3
Q
Cathode
A
- Negative Electrode
- Positive Ions move to the Cathode
4
Q
Anode
A
- Positive Electrode
- Negative Ions move to the Anode
5
Q
Reduction Reaction
A
- Where Ions gain electrons to form atoms (no charge)
- E.g. +2 charge + -2 electron —> atom (no charge)
6
Q
Oxidation Reaction
A
- Where Ions loose electrons to form atoms (no charge)
- E.g. -1 charge - -1 electron —> atom (no charge)
7
Q
Why we use Electrolysis
A
- If a metal is too reactive to be reduced with Carbon
8
Q
Disadvantages of Electrolysis
A
- Extremely expensive and requires lots of energy to melt the ore and produce the required current
