B5, B6 and B7 - Non/Communicable Diseases and Preventing Them Flashcards
Communicable Disease
Can spread from person to person
Non Communicable Disease
- Cant be spread onto another
- Usually inherited
- Last longer, slowly get worse
- Not caused by a Pathogen
Factors affecting health
- Healthcare access
- Stress
- Poor Diet
Risk Factors
Increase the chance of someone getting a disease
Risk Factors effecting diseases
- Smoking
- Drinking
Carcinogens
Things that cause Cancer
Cancer
Area of the body with uncontrollable Cell Growth and Division
Virus
(Also Pathogens) which are the source of a disease
Types of Viruses
Bacteria and Fungi
Virus Diseases Examples
- HIV, through sex/needles, flu-like symptoms
- Measles, spread through infected persons sneeze/cough
- TMV, affects plants Chlorophyll production, discoloured leaves, doesn’t allow photosynthesis
What are diseases caused by
- Viruses
- Fungi
- Protists
Bacterium Diseases Examples
- Salmonella, caused by food poisoning, vomiting/stomach aches
- Gonorrhoea (STD), through sexual contact, pain while urinating and substance when urinating
Preventing a Disease
- Hygiene, washing hands
- Isolating, stop spread of the disease
- Vaccination, against communicable diseases, stops it from passing on
Protist Disease Examples
-Malaria, mosquitos infect others with another animals blood vessel, can be fatal
Vaccination
- Inject dead, unharmful Pathogens of a Virus which makes antibodies for immune system to fight off the real Virus
- Don’t always work
Physical Body Features to protect you from Pathogens
- Skin acting as a protective layer against Pathogens
- Mucus in the Stomach/Lungs trapping Pathogens
Stages of Drug Testing
- Drug tested on Human Cells/Tissues in a lab which only effects 1 bodily system
- Drug test on animals to test efficacy, provide right results: toxicity, dose needed
- Tested on Volunteers in a Clinical Trial
- Peer-Review with other Scientists
Single-Blind Test Trial
- Patient unaware of drug given, information isn’t varied due to this
Double-Blind Test Trial
- Both patient and doctor don’t know the drug given to the patient, allows no changes in both outcomes, not biased
Peer-Reviewing
- Other scientists review your drug, done so you aren’t biased on your own drug
Bacteria Immunity
- Bacteria can be immune to Antibiotics if patient doesn’t take the medicine for the given time
- Bacteria has time to reproduce after Antibiotics attack them, giving the new Bacteria Immunity
Risk Factors increasing chance of Cancer
- Smoking, increasing Lung Cancer
- Obesity increases Bowel, Liver, Kidney Cancer
- UV exposure (from the Sun) increases skin cancer
Benign Tumour
- Doesn’t usually spread to other parts of the body
- Isn’t usually dangerous
Malignant Tumour
- Grows and spreads to other parts of the body, the cells can break off and flow through the bloodstream
- Dangerous and requires radiation to shrink it down
Genetics and Diseases
- They can possibly increase the risk of the diseases, inherited disorders making your immune system weaker
Protection against Diseases
- Isolation
Increasing Factors of CHD
- Lack of exercise, causing Obesity
- High blood pressure, puts stress on Arteries
- High Cholesterol
- Lack of Fruit/Veg
- Bad diet, fatty deposits/diabetes
