C5 Flashcards
What’s oxidisation
the gaining of oxygen atoms, loss of electrons
what’s reduction
the losing of oxygen atoms, gaining of electrons,
What’s an oxidising agent
substance which oxidises another substance during a redox reaction meaning causes the lose of electrons, gaining of oxygen .
What’s a reducing agent
a substance which reduces another substance during a redox reaction, meaning causing it to gain electrons or lose oxygen atoms
Order of reactivity
Potassium, Sodium, Lithium, Calcium, Magnesium, Aluminium, Carbon, Zinc, Iron, Lead, Hydrogen, Copper, Silver, Gold, Platinum
Useful memory tip for order of reactivity
Please stop laughing and calling me a careless zebra. instead learn how cops save gold&plantinum
When and how to use order of reactivity rules
More reactive metals displace less reactive metals from their aqueous ions. Meaning they will became the metal in the solution and the percipitate will be the former metal.
More reactive metals reduce oxides of less reactive metals. Meaning they will became the metal in the oxide.
What conditions are required for rusting to occur
presence of oxygen and water, without either it will not rust
What is rusting
it refers to corrosion of iron, rust being iron oxide
