Breast Histology Flashcards
what is the breast made up of
15-25 lobes- each consisting of a tubulo-acinar gland which drains via a series of ducts leading to the nipple
Adjacent to the secretory lobules is dense fibrous tissue, which is surrounded by fat
structure of the duct system
terminal ductules -> intralobular collecting duct -> the lactiferous duct for that lobe -> lactiferous sinus -> nipple
what lines the larger ducts
columnar epithelium
histology of the nipple
covered by highly pigmented keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
core of dense irregular connective tissue mixed with bundles of smooth muscle
changes in the breast during the luteal phase
epithelial cells increase in height
the lumina of the ducts become enlarged
small amounts of secretions appear in the ducts
what are the changes in the breast during 1st trimester of pregnancy
elongation and branching of smaller ducts
proliferation of the epithelial cells of the glands and the myoepithelial cells
what are the changes in the breast during 2nd trimester of pregnancy
secretory alveoli continue to mature
development of extensive rough ER
What changes in the breast occur throughout pregnancy
reduction in the amount of connective tissue and adipose
what stimulates the proliferation of secretory tissue and reduction of fibroid-fatty tissue seen in pregnancy
oestrogen and progesterone
composition of breast milk
88% water
1.5% protein
7% carbohydrate
3.5% lipid
what is passed to the baby through breast milk
ions
vitamins
IgA antibodies
where are the proteins in breast milk made
rER of the breast
what is merocrine secretion
rER makes protein, packaged in the gold apparatus and secreted via vesicles
merge with apical membrane and realise their contents into the duct system
what is apocrine secretion
lipid droplets bud off, surrounded by membrane and carrying a small about of cytoplasm
which hormones stimulates growth of ductile system
oestrogen
