What do mammary glands do?
Produce and eject milk

What are myoepithelial cells?
Line outside of mammary glands
squeeze milk along a gland towards the nipple

What does the Areola do?
Produce lipoid fluid so the nipple doesn’t crack
Gives the baby a target food source

What does the fat in breast do?
Support glandular structures

What causes lactation?
Infant suckles on a mothers breast/ cries
Mechana receptors send a signal to the brain
Hypothalamus then sends oxytocin and prolactin inhibiting hormone
Prolactin stimulates milk production
Oxytocin stimulates milk release
What causes breast development?
Release of oestrogen and progesterone
Pregnancy causes final maturation
What is poland syndrome?
Underdevelopment or absence of chest muscle
Where is the breast located?
between the 2nd and 6th rib
Sternal edge to anterior axillary line
15-20 lobes
supported by coopers suspensory ligaments
What is the blood supply to the breast?
External and internal mammary artery
Intercostal arteries

Men

What are the risk factors of breast cancer?
women, age, family history, genetics, alcohol, obesity, radiation, high socioeconomic class, previous cancer
How can you decrease your risk of breast cancer?
First pregnancy before 30
breast feed
exercise
healthy organic diet
How can breast cancer be removed?
Surgery- wide local excision, mastectomy, Sentinal lymph node biopsy, Axillary dissection
Adjuvant- Chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, DXT
