BK 100 Chpt 7-9 Flashcards
What is the definition of “lobby” when referring to elevators and their use?
The floor of the elevator will respond to upon recall. It may be the main floor or any other level that best serves the needs of emergency personnel for firefighting or Rescue purposes. This floor will also contain the “emergency service switch”
Where shall smoke detectors be placed?
Adjacent to the elevator at each landing. Usually on each floor except the lobby
What happens during phase 1, recall phase?
Elevators will respond non-stop to the lobby and ignore all other call request
Besides manually recalling elevators, how else may phase 1 be initiated?
Automatic elevators traveling more than 50 feet (or more than 25 feet, if new after 10/06/1975) may be recalled to the lobby by sensing devices (smoke detectors)
What is phase 2?
Override phase, when utilized by firefighters
All automatic elevators traveling over how many feet or more above the lowest grade level may be recalled to lobby by smoke detectors or manually?
70 feet
Utilizing the elevators for us sent in investigations or firefighting operations shall only be for reported locations above what floor?
The sixth floor
Elevators shall not be taken closer than how many floors to the reported fire floor or floor with alarm activation?
Two floors below the reported location or lowest floor with an alarm activation
If elevators automatically recall, must the elevator recall switch still be used?
Yes
What types of elevators shall not be used until determined safe by FD personnel on the desired floor and approved by IC to use?
Elevator is not equipped with phase 2 emergencies Firefighter service, freight elevators
If the building is equipped with split banks elevators, do not use an elevator that services the fire floor if a lower Bank reaches within how many floors of the fire floor?
Five floors
What type of elevators should be avoided whenever possible?
Blind shaft elevators
The presence of what in the elevator or shaft will dictate the elevator not be used?
Fire, smoke, water
Prior to going aloft in elevator, members must don what?
Facepiece
What tool shall remain in the elevator car with the operator?
Dry chem extinguisher
If an Engine company is first on scene alone, may they utilize elevators for their ascent?
No, requires minimum of 5 people (4 fire attack, 1 elevator operator)
What is the purpose of the bypass function on the elevator?
Once building has been determined safe, but still enough residual smoke to actuate the detector to prevent the elevators from operating
Elevators installed after October 1985 must have what feature for emergency personnel?
Call cancel Button
What is the required fire flow for a class 1 dry standpipes?
500 GPM her riser
What are the requirements which dictate where the outlets are located?
Every point in the structure must be reachable by a 30 foot stream from a nozzle with/100 feet of hose
What are the flow requirements for wet standpipes at psi slowing 3 the roof outlet?
Pre-48 = 8 psi flowing 20 GPM
48-59 = 12 psi flowing 35 GPM
60-70 = 15 psi slowing 35 GPM
70- present= 30 psi flowing 35 GPM
What were building heights limited to and when did that restriction go away?
150 feet and 1960
Why are the Jockey pumps installed?
To make a minor leakage rates in the system pressure and prevent the fire pump from continually starting and stopping
What is the required fire flow for class three combinations standpipe?
1000 GPM per riser
What is the required flow for each 2 1/2” outlet on a class III system?
300 GPM
What years were looped systems be found?
1983 - 1988
When are pressure regulating device is required?
Any standpipe outlet where static pressure exceeds 150 psi
What are pressure regulating device is required to provide?
80–125 Psi Flowing 300 GPM
What are fire pumps required to pump?
Pump 150% of rated capacity and not less than 65% of capacity for a minimum of 15 minutes
What is the minimum flow rate for the vane type water flow switch?
4 to 10 GPM
When should the water flow alarm sound?
Within 20 to 60 seconds of water flowing
Where are pressure restricting devices found?
When static pressure is between 135 and 150 psi
If you remove the restricting mechanism what must be done?
Leave a member at the outlet to control flow
On site water supply must supply what GPM for the standpipe for buildings 1974 between 75’ and 150’?
Calculated sprinkler fire flow for the most demanding rectangular area of the building for 30 minutes, PLUS an additional 100gpm
On site water supply must supply what GPM for the standpipe for buildings 1974 between 150’ and 275’?
500GPM for the first riser plus 250GPM for each additional riser, for 30 mins
For buildings exceeding 275’, what size water tank may be found?
45,000 gallons to 105,000 gallons
How many methods must there be to fill the tank?
2 methods
What size pipe and what time requirement must the tank be filled in?
2” minimum diameter pipe to fill within 12 hrs or if after 1983, a pipe to refill within 8 hrs
Buildings under construction of what height shall have a minimum of ONE standpipe for the construction phase?
6 or more stories
Buildings under construction with temporary standpipes over 150’ shall have what?
Manually started fire pumps
What is the fire pump required to pump during its test?
150% of rated capacity and a pressure not less than 65% of rated pressure for at least 15 minutes
How can you distinguish between test valves and FDC valves?
FDCs always have female threads, Test valves have male threads
What psi above the fire pumps psi should the jockey pump be set at?
5-10 psi above the fire pumps starting pressure
Since 1974, buildings over 275’ have how many fire pumps?
Three, one electric, two diesel
How much fuel should the diesel pumps have available?
Post ‘74 -8 hours, ‘60-‘74-4 hours
What is the START and STOP pressure for fire pumps as related to system pressure? (Cut In/Cut Out)
STOP- 10 psi below system pressure
START- 50psi below System pressure
What is the run out time set for?
7-10 minutes for electric pumps, 30 min for diesel
Where should salvage operation begin?
Area where the greatest loss is expected
