Bio - Unit 1, Chapter 1 Flashcards
Define biology
the study of life
Define organisms
living things
Define biosphere
the parts of the earth that sustain life
Define species
a group of organisms so similar to one another that they can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
What 5 main areas of life in which Biology has an affect?
food, clothing, shelter, health, and fuel
7 characteristics common to all living things?
-made up of cells, reproduce, uses energy, grows, organized, responds to environment, evolve or change.
What are the levels of organization?
-atoms and molecules, cells, tissue, organ, organ system, population, community, and ecosystem.
Define atoms and molecules.
Make up cells and therefore life. (DNA)
Define cells
the smallest unit of life capable of carrying out all of the functions of living things. all organisms are made up of cells.
Define tissue
a group of cells that perform a specific function in an organism.
Define organ
several different types of tissues that function together to perform a specific function.
Define organ system.
made up of several organs who work together to perform a function.
Define population.
a group of organisms of the same species that live together in a particular location.
Define community.
all the populations of different kinds of organisms living in the same space.
Define ecosystem.
The community of organisms in an area, as well as the non-living factors of the environment.
What are the main causes of the greatest mass extinction?
- human interference
- pollution
- climate change
What can help preserve life on Earth?
A great understanding of species and their environments.
What are our main energy sources?
fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas (non-renewable)
Fossil fuels are the….
…remains of past plant life.
What are some examples of renewable sources?
solar, wind, and water power.
