Bio 20 Unit 3 - Fungi Flashcards
4 common characteristics of Fungi?
- multicellular
- eukaryotic
- heterotrophs
- named according to reproductive structure
What is the common name and an example of a Phylum Zygomycota?
cn: molds
ex: bread mold
Name the reproductive structure in a phylum zygomycota/mold
sporangium
What is the common name and an example of a Phylum Basidiomycota?
cn: club fungi
ex: mushrooms
Name the reproductive structure in a phylum basidiomycota/club fungi.
basidium
What is the common name and an example of a Phylum Ascomycota?
cn: sac fungi
ex: yeast, dutch elm disease
Name the reproductive structure in a phylum ascomycota/sac fungi.
ascus
What is the common name and an example of a Phylum Deuteromycota?
cn: imperfect fungi
ex: penicillium, athletes foot
Name the reproductive structure in a phylum deuteromycota/imperfect fungi
No sexual reproduction, only asexual
Which 2 kinds of fungus have hyphae?
phylum zygomycota and phylum basidiomycota
What are saprophytes?
Obtain their nutrients by digesting and absorbing nutrients from dead organisms.
What are hyphae?
strands filled with cytoplasm and nuclei that form the body of a fungus
What is mycelium?
the mass of tangled, interwoven hyphae that form the body of a fungus
How do fungi get food?
They obtain nutrients from other organisms. Some are parasitic and obtain from their host and a few are predators and trap/kill their prey.
