Bacteria Flashcards
What is Enterobacteriaceae
A classification of more than 15 different bacteria, including klebsiella, enterobacter, serratia, proteus and escherichia.
What are some characteristics of enterobacteriaceae?
gram negative rod: yes
facultative anaerobes: yes
ferment glucose: yes
normal inhabitants of man and animals
E. Coli
gram negative rod: yes
facultative anaerobe: yes
ferments: lactose (different from shigella and salmonella)
virulence factor: pili, capsule, exotoxins, O157:H7 > HUS
plate: pink on MacConkey
indole: yes
notes: most common cause of UTI by a lot!
What is a complicated UTI?
observed in elderly patients with structural deficiencies such as prostatic hypertrophy, catheters, or vesiculoureteral abnormalities.
Kelbsiella
gram negative rod: yes facultative anaerobe: yes ferments: lactose plate: pink on MacConkey notes: indole negative
Serratia
gram negative rod: yes facultative anaerobe: yes ferments: plate: notes: makes red pigment when plated (not on MacConkey)
Proteus
gram negative rod: yes facultative anaerobe: ferments: non-lactose fermenter plate: colorless colonies on MacConkey notes: swarming on blood agar
Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
gram negative rod: yes facultative anaerobe: NO... AEROBIC ferments: GLUCOSE plate: plates blue on MacConkey notes: loves water (Silia), cystic fibrosis, burn victims, long stays in ICU are especially at risk, fluorescence under UV radiation
Enterococcus
- gram + cocci
- catalase -
- can grow in crazy pH and 6.5% NaCl broth
Candida sp.
- fungal pathogen
- neither gram + or gram -
- found on pts who recently finished Abx
