B6 More On Biodiversity Flashcards
How can humans prevent loss of biodiversity and preserve it for future generations?
Sustainability
Protecting specific species
Protecting habitats and ecosystems
Preventing ecosystems damage on a global scale
What is sustainability?
Mean the needs of today’s population without harming the environment or using up resources, so future generations can still meet their own needs.
What does it mean to use resources sustainably?
It means that the rate at which we use resources is not greater than the rate at which they are replaced.
Give an example of sustainable use of timber
Sustainable harvesting of timber may involve the replanting of trees after harvesting so that new trees replace the ones that are cut.
Complete the sentence.
Sustainability means humans will have less of a negative impact on …….. and biodiversity
Ecosystems
List three types of conservation schemes.
Protecting plant species
Protecting habitats and ecosystems
Preventing ecosystem damage on a global scale
How can we protect specific species to protect biodiversity?
Protect them in their natural habitat (eg prevent hunting of some species)
Protect them by keeping them in safe areas (eg zoos or botanical gardens or seed banks)
Breeding programmes in captivity can increase the number of a species before releasing the, back into the wild.
How can we protect habitats and ecosystems?
By setting aside specific protected areas to help conserve habitats or ecosystems (eg restricting the development of land for building or farming)
Where are protected areas that help conserve entire habitats and ecosystems?
National parks and Nature reserves
This includes areas in the sea to protect marine ecosystems
What human activities are increasing the level of greenhouse gases?
Burning fossil fuels
What is the problem with an increasing level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere?
Global warming (the gradual warming of the planet)
What is global warming?
A type of climate change.
How can biodiversity be affected by climate change!
Some species may not be able to survive a change in the climate, so become extinct.
Why may it be necessary to control human activities that produce green house gases?
It may be necessary to control human activities in order to reduce greenhouse gas emission, in order to protect global biodiversity.
The Siberian tiger is an endangered species. Explain how zoos could help to increase the number of Siberian tigers in the wild. (2 marks)
Captive breeding programmes in zoos can be used to increase the number of Siberian tigers (1 mark)
Some of these individuals can then be released into the wild (1 mark)
