B2 -Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
Light
Carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
Chlorophyll
6CO2 + 6H2O –> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What do photosynthetic organisms do during photosynthesis?
They use energy from the sun to make glucose.
Name two photosynthetic organisms.
Green plants and algae.
What is the glucose used for?
Some is used in cellular respiration and some is converted into starch and stored, some is used to make larger more complex molecules that the plant or algae need to grow
Name three larger complex molecules that plants or algae need to grow.
Lipids
Proteins
Carbohydrates.
Where does photosynthesis happen?
Inside subcellular structures called chloroplasts.
Some prokaryotes can photosynthesis all though they don’t have chloroplasts.
How is energy transfer to the chlorophyll from the environment?
By light.
What does the chloroplasts contain?
Enzymes that catalyse reactions in photosynthesis and chlorophyll which absorbs light.
What type of reaction is photosynthesis?
Endothermic
What are two main stages of photosynthesis?
Energy transferred to the chlorophyll is used to spilt water into oxygen gas and hydrogen ions, the oxygen is release as a waste produce.
Carbon dioxide gas then combines with hydrogen ions to make glucose
