B5 Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
Involves balancing body functions to maintain a constant internal environment
Conditions in your body need to be kept within a narrow range. Why is this important?
So all the enzyme-controlled metabolic reactions that take place within your cells continue at an appropriate rate.
Why is it important that enzyme-controlled metabolic reactions continue at an appropriate rate?
It can be dangerous for your health if conditions vary too much from normal conditions.
What does your body need to respond to, to maintain a constant into all environemnt?
Internal and external changes whilst balancing inputs (stuff going into your body) with outputs (stuff leaving).
Things that you need to keep steady
Blood glucose (sugar) concentration (need to make sure it doesn’t get too high or too low)
Water content
(Needs to keep a balance between water you gain in drink food and respiration, and the water you lose by urinating, sweating, breathe out.
Body temperature (Need to make sure it doesn’t get too high or too low)
