B3 - Making and Breaking Biological Molecules Flashcards
What are organic molecules?
Molecules that contain carbon.
List 3 organic molecules.
Carbohydrates
Lipids
Proteins.
What are long chain carbohydrates made from?
Simple sugars
Give an example of a long chain carbohydrate.
Starch
What are proteins made from?
Amino acids
What are lipids made from?
Fat acids and glycerol
Where do producers get the elements they need to survive?
The environment.
Carbon from the air and nitrate from the soil
What do producers use to make glucose during photosynthesis?
Carbon along with oxygen and hydrogen
What is glucose used for?
Used to make small molecules eg. Sugars, fatty acids and glycerol.
What combine to make amino acids?
Glucose and nitrate ions.
What do producers use small molecules for?
To make long chain carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.
What do producers use larger molecules for?
Building structures like cell membranes and organelles.
What are synthesised reactions catalysed by?
Enzymes.
Where do consumers get Carbon and nitrogen compounds rom?
By eating and digesting the large organic molecules in producers and other consumers
What does digestion do to large molecules?
Breaks them down into small molecules, so they are more easily absorbed.
