Axial Skeleton Flashcards
What is the nasal bone?
top of the nose that forms the bridge of the nose
What is the ethmoid sinus?
bunch of little holes below the cribriform plate
What is the frontal sinus?
cavity within the frontal bone; right above the nose
What is the temporomandibular joint?
place where the mandible and temporal bone comes together
What is the mandibular notch?
U shape in-between the two processes
What is the temporal bone?
temple area of the skull
What is a true rib?
connect individually to the sternum
What is the greater wing?
deep curved indent below the lesser wing
What is the sphenoid sinus?
underneath the sella turcica
What is a false rib?
don’t individually connect to the sternum
What is the angle of the mandible?
part connecting the body and ramus of the mandible
What is the frontal bone?
bone of the forehead; front of the head
What is the basilar part?
flat part inside the skull by the foramen magnum; also extends to the outside
What is the palatine bone?
back part of the mouth
What does the cervical vertebra look like?
mouse/elephant
What is the ethmoid bone?
located between the eyes and forms the roof of the nasal cavity; small part
What does the thoracic vertebra look like?
giraffe
What is the costal facet?
on the transverse process where the ribs connect
What is the dens?
process on the axis that sticks up the top and articulates with the atlas
What is the foramen lacerum?
between the petrous part of temporal bone, sphenoid bone, and occipital bone; side of the Turkish saddle
What is the mastoid process?
rounded process of the temporal bone
What is the auricular surface?
rough part on the sides that articulate with the auricular surface on the os coxa
What is the superior articular process?
bump that sticks out at the top
What is the lamina?
flat part between the spinous process and transverse process
What is the head of the rib?
the end of the posterior part
What is the optic canal?
eyes of the manta-ray
What is the xiphoid process?
bottom pointy part of the sternum
What is the body of a vertebra?
flat part
What is the supraorbital ridge?
ridge above the eye socket; eyebrow of the skull
What does costal mean?
rib
What is the superior articular facet?
just the surface of the superior articular process where another vertebrae connects on the top
What is the stylomastoid foramen?
opening located between the styloid process and mastoid process
What is the ramus of the mandible?
flat part on the side
What is the pedicle?
little bridge that connects the body to the top part that sticks out
What vertebra is the costal facet apart of?
thoracic vertebra
What is the external occipital protuberance?
little bump on the back of the skull
How many lumbar vertebra are there?
5
What is the mandibular fossa?
dip where the jaw connects
What vertebra is the dens found on?
cervical vertebra
What is the inferior nasal concha?
spiral on the sides of the vomer
What is the transverse process?
stick out the sides of the vertebra; more lateral
What is the sagittal suture?
joins the parietal bones/ middle of the head
What is the lateral ptergoid plate?
vertical process that laterally and inferiorly projects from the sphenoid; are lateral ridge on the underside of the skull behind the teeth
What is the transverse foramen?
hole that goes through the transverse process
What is the costal groove?
bottom of the rib where there is an indent
What is the zygomatic arch?
formed by joining of the zygomatic bone and the temporal bone; goes back towards the temporal bone
What vertebra is the transverse foramen found on?
cervical vertebra
What is the coronoid process?
front process of the mandible
