All members should wear SCBA’s in the following situations :
- Performing interior structural firefighting ops
- Performing interior structural emergency ops when toxic substances or smoke present
- Operating at exterior positions where exposed to smoke or toxic substances
- Operating in confined spaces
- When it’s possible that atmosphere in work environment is IDLH area
who can dispense with use of SCBA
Only authorized by IC
When can you remove your SCBA regulator when operating in smoke or toxic environment ?
- Member cylinder becomes depleted
2. Member SCBA malfunctioning so it cuts off air supply
If member leaves IDLH because of depleted air or malfunctioning SCBA they must :
- Notify officer
2 . Immediately leave contaminated area - Accompanied by another SCBA using member
Remove face piece in uncontaminated area
What will company officer do when one of his members has to leave contaminated area do to air depletion or malfunction?
Inform IC that member has malfunction
Member is being accompanied by another member
Also notify IC when member has safely exited
When officer SCBA is depleted or malfunctioning what shall they do
Notify IC
Be accompanied by another member
Ensure other members under direct supervision are supervised properly while gone
If cannot provide for proper supervision all members under direct supervision must be withdrawn
When is face piece sharing prohibited
All circumstances with members and civilans
What are the options to provide o2 for members and or civilians who are trapped ?
- Trapped members utilize nearest fastpak ( including fast truck )
- For civilians utilize FAST pak other than the FAST units
- Spare SCBA for trapped member or civilian
Other nonstructural operations where SCBA should be worn/ used?
Outside rubbish Brush Dump fires Advs Auto/ truck / bus fires Transformer vaults Certain non- structural emergencies Other incidents where possible of exposure to toxic substances
Designated training cylinders can be identified by
Blue top and/or a polymer protective sleeve
Not to be used for firefighting purposes
Atmospheric pressure will affect the duration of a cylinder .how will it affect it ?
2 atmospheres will cause the cylinder to last half as long as 1 atmosphere and 3 atmospheres will cause the cylinder to last a third as long as 1 atmosphere
To open cylinder valve
Open fully counter- clockwise
To close push valve in a turn clockwise to stop
