AUC 151 Brush FIRE ops Flashcards
Head of fire
Leading edge of moving fire
Weather is the controlling factor affecting the severity and incidence of brush fires . Serious brush fire conditions occur when he following weather conditions exist
- Low humidity
- Winds in excess of 15 mph
- Little or no rain fall for preceding 3 or more days
The rear of fire
Fire opposite head
Looking at fire from the rear of blackened area
The left side is left flank and right side is right flank
Fingers
Are strips of long thin sections of fire extending outward from the main blackened area
Spot fires
Are isolated small fires downwind from the main fire that caused by brand of fire carried by wind
Surface fire is a type of brush fire that
Burn grass weeds small trees leaves on the ground
Fast moving
Most common type in NYC
Bog fires are a type of brush fire that
Start on surface and burn downward into soft spongy ground
Burn slowly
Can burn for extended periods of time sometimes extending for days or weeks
Common in dried out marshland
Generally smolder under ground with no oblivious extension hazard
Require burrowing holes in the big inserting hoseline and flooding using large amounts of water
All engine companies assigned to Staten Island shall have the following brush fire tools and equipment
1 . Two Indian pumps
- Four fire brooms
- 1” forestry hose
All engine companies relocated or assigned to respond on boxes 100d-400d or on 2nd alarms or greater for brush shall carry a minimum of
Two Indian pumps
Four fire brooms
All ladder companies assigned to Staten Island shall carry the following brush tools and equipment
Four Indian pumps
Four fire brooms
Six lengths of 1 3/4 hose
Portable pumps( dewatering pumps ) are assigned to BFUs and many other units they can be utilized for
From remote streams ponds and any other suitable sources to supply an adequate hand line with constant water source for brush fire ops or to resupply expended Indian pumps
What is best water source for brush fires
Hydrants are best positive water source
BFU FACTS
In service all year
Independently staffed during brush fire months
Fire records on independent fire record regardless weather indecently staffed or not
Should be operated by trained members of associated engine company
Chauffeur is member trained in operating vehicle, if necessary member in associated engine who is trained in driving shall be detailed to BFU and member hired on ot put in engine to backfill position
If a BFU is damaged during operation
Report endorsed by associated engine company commander
Forward to chief of ops via chain
Officer in command must comply with normal fleet service notifications and or accident apparatus requirements p
When BFUs independently staffed
Separate from associated engine
Respond to nonstructural fires as single unit or with associated engine or another engine or ladder
At discretion of dispatcher
Perform patrols twice a day between 1030-1130 and 1530-1630 hours
Copies of patrol area kept on BFU apparatus
Officer in charge advise dispatcher when 10-8’on patrol and again when 10-9’ in quarters
If stop for condition notify dispatcher
BFUs will receive runs over MDT
No MDT radio
BFU wenches can be used for
Self extrication and towing similar size vehicles
No full size apparatus
Company commander of BFU units shall keep a record of members trained where
Uniform filing system
BFUs besides brush fires can be used for

- Hurricane and severe weather
- High winds with fallen trees and numerous wires down
- Dewatering ops
- Special events

Tactics at brush fires
- Protect exposures
- Initial attack operations concentrate on mobility
Avoid hooking up to hydrant s except to protect exposures - Once exposures covered the fire attack can begin
Attack when wind diminishes - Consider wetting down unburned area ahead
5 in general avoid attacking from front of fire - If necessary to operate in front of fire ( for life) sufficient lines in place
- Attack fire from flanks
- Extinguish from flanks first then move to interior burning areas
- Streams should be directed at burning brush not at the flames burning above the brush
- Bypass stumps and trees until fire under control
10 advance through burnt out areas to attack fire
