Alzheimer’s vs dementia
Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia
Age for presenile/early dementia
manifestations beginning in their 40’s (over 65 is most common diagnosis)
Alzheimer’s medication
mostly treast behavioral and emotional problems
Donepezil (Aricept) function
prevents breakdown of ACh
Alzheimer’s medication nursing considerations
Observe for frequent stools or upset stomach.
Monitor for dizziness, HA or unsteady gait.
Use caution in asthma or COPD.
Estrogen therapy
for women, may prevent Alzheimer’s disease, but it is not useful in decreasing the effects of pre-existing dementia.
Ginkgo biloba
causes many medication interactions and should be avoided
Alzheimer’s Stage 1
No impairment (Normal function) No memory problems
Alzheimer’s Stage 2
Very mild cognitive decline
Alzheimer’s Stage 3
Mild cognitive decline, Short-term memory loss noticeable to close relatives
Alzheimer’s Stage 4
Moderate cognitive decline, appearing withdrawn or subdued, especially in social or mentally challenging situations
Alzheimer’s Stage 5
Moderately severe cognitive decline, Assistance with ADLs becomes necessary, Disorientation and confusion as to time and place
Alzheimer’s Stage 6
Severe cognitive decline, Significant personality changes are evident
Alzheimer’s Stage 7
Very severe cognitive decline, Unrecognizable speech, General urinary incontinence, Inability to eat without assistance and impaired swallowing
