Antiparasitic Drugs Flashcards
What is parasitism
a relationship between 2 different organisms in which one of the organisms (parasite) benefits while the other (the host) is harmed
Helminths are divided into what 2 major groups
Nematodes and Platyhelminthes
Nematodes are
cylindrical, nofsegmented worms (roundworms and hookworms)
Platyhelminthes are
flattened worms subdivided into cestodes (tapeworms) and trematodes (flukes)
Anthelmintics do what
kill worm parasites
Type of anthelmintics
antinematodals
anticestodals
antitrematodals
Benzimidazoles are _ and are recognized by “
-azole” ending in drug name
antinematodals
Ex of benzimidazoles
-Thiabendazole: has antifungal and anti-inflammatory effects
-Fenbendazole (Panacur): wide spectrum of activity; give for 3 days
-Albendazole (valbazen)
Panacur is effective against
hooks, whips, rounds, giardia
Imidazothiazoles are effective against
ascarids, strongyles, whipworms, and hookworms
Example of an imidazothiazole
levamisole
Tetrahydropyrimidines are effective against
ascarids, pinworms, strongyles, and hookworms
What do tetrahydropyrimidines do
mimic the action of ACh and cause paralysis of the worm
Examples of tetrahydropyrimidines
pyrantel pamoate (Nemex, Strongid), pyrantal tatrate, and morantel tartrate
Strongid is effective against
hooks and rounds
Avermectins are sensitive to what breed
collie
Ivermectin is used for
heart worm prevention and mange
Another example of an avermectin
moxidectin
Avermectins are not effective against
cestodes or trematodes
What is piperazine effective against
ascarids
What is present in most OTC dewormers
Piperazine
-antel is for
tapes
Anticestodals
Praziquantel
Epsiprantel
Fenbendazole
Praziquantel works on
all cestode species (also used to eliminate fleas)
