what is the mechanism of vancomycin?
A
Forms hydrogen bond with D alanyl D alanine of NAM/NAG peptides inhibit cell wall peptidoglycan matrix

what does vancomycin cover?
A
Gram positive ONLY including MRSA

what are the indications for vancomycin?
A
- MRSA infections bacteraemia, endocarditis, skin and soft tissue infection, pneumonia, meningitis
- Alternative for GPC treatment in penicillin allergic patients

what are the adverse effects of vancomycin?
A
Infusion related reaction Red man syndrome
- Histamine related flushing, usually face and neck
- Avoid rapid infusion
Haematological: neutropenia (1-2%), particularly with prolonged treatment
Nephrotoxicity with elevated trough levels. Avoid concomitant nephrotoxic agents
