Anti-virals and Treatment of Common Viral Infections Flashcards
1
Q
what is Aciclovir (ACV)
A
Anti-herpesvirus drug
2
Q
Describe ACV: Mechanism of Action
A
Pro-drug, activated to a monophosphate by viral thymidine kinase only in herpesvirus-infected cells
Host cell kinases adds a 2nd and 3rd phosphate group
Aciclovir triphosphate competitively inhibits herpesvirus-specific DNA polymerases
Further viral DNA synthesis inhibited without affecting other normal cellular functions
