Acute Kidney Injury Flashcards
what is the definition of AKI?
an abrupt reduction in kidney function in under 48 hours
what change in serum creatinine suggests AKI?
increase by >26.4umol/l
what change in creatinine suggests AKI?
increase by 50%
what change in urine output suggests AKI?
reduction
how is AKI staged?
using the KDIGO staging criteria
what are the risk factors related to patients for AKI? (5)
older age CKD or AKI diabetes cardiac failure liver disease
what are the risk factors related to exposure for AKI? (4)
hypotension + hypovolemia
sepsis
deteriorating NEWS
exposure to nephrotoxic drugs
what are the three types of AKI classified by cause?
pre renal
renal
post renal
what causes pre-renal AKI?
anything that reduces perfusion to the kidneys
hypovolaemia, hypotension, hypoperfusion
what is the normal value for urine output?
0.5ml/kg/hour
what is the pathophysiology behind pre-renal AKI?
reversible volume depletion leads to oliguria and raised creatinine
what volume of urine is considered to be oliguria?
less than 0.5ml/kg/hour
what does untreated pre-renal AKI lead to?
acute tubular necrosis
what are some common causes of acute tubular necrosis?
sepsis
severe dehydration
what causes renal AKI?
anything that causes inflammation or damage to kidney cells
