7C: Pulmonary Surgery Flashcards
What is Thoracentesis?
Needle is inserted into chest to draw fluid out of chest
Why might a CT be placed after a Thoracentesis?
Maintain negative thoracic cage pressure
What is a Lobectomy?
Removal of lung segment or complete lobe
What are indications for a Lobectomy?
Mass or tumor, COPD or other hyperventilation, severe CF leading to repeated infection
What is a consequence of Lobectomy?
Increase V/Q matching as there is less dead space
What is Lung Volume Reduction Surgery?
Similar to lobectomy, but may not take the entire lobe
What is Lung Volume Reduction Surgery indicated?
Obstructive pathology - COPD
What is the result of Lung Volume Reduction Surgery?
Decreased volume in the lungs so that gas levels are more normalized to allow for better V/Q exchange
What type of lung transplant is almost aways performed?
Double lung transplant
What is needed after a lung transplant?
Immunosuppressants
What are precautions/restrictions following lung surgeries?
Depends on the location of the incision, but may need to restrict UE motion, stretching, coughing, deep breathing
What are possible treatments following lung surgery?
Early mobility, ADLs, deep breathing, coughing, postural drainage, percussion
