1A: Cardiac Anatomy and Function Flashcards
What three factors assist the force of contraction?
- Arterial recoil during diastole
- Skeletal compression of veins during exercise
- Negative thoracic pressure during inspiration
What are the four layers of cardiac tissue?
- Endocardium
- Myocardium
- Epicardium
- Pericardium
What is the endocardium composed of?
Endothelial tissue
What is the myocardium composed of?
Striated muscle fibers
What is the epicardium composed of?
Connective tissue
What is the pericardium composed of?
Fibrous sac
What are the four valves of the heart?
- Aortic
- Pulmonic
- Tricuspid
- Mitral
What is the foramen ovale?
Hole that normally closes in neonatal period and becomes a sulcus in the interseptal wall
What are the two main types of valvular dysfunction?
- Stenosis
- Insufficiency
What is stenosis?
Valve is narrowed, stiff, or rigid making it difficult to open
What does stenosis result in?
Hypertrophy of the muscles that the chamber is trying to empty
What is insufficiency?
Loss of patency, meaning that the valve does not fully close
What does insufficiency result in?
Dilation of the chamber that is trying to empty
What type of valvular dysfunction impairs cardiac output?
Both stenosis and insufficiency
What is the formula for cardiac output?
CO = stroke volume x HR
What does the right coronary artery (RCA) supply?
- Right atrium and ventricle
- SA node (55% of people)
- AV node and Bundle of His
What does the left coronary artery (LCA) branch off into?
- Left anterior descending
- Left circumflex
What is considered to be the most important coronary artery?
Left anterior descending (LAD)
What does the left anterior descending (LAD) artery supply?
- Left ventricle (part of the right)
- Interventricular septum
- Apex of both ventricles
What does the left circumflex (Lcx) artery supply?
- Left ventricle
- Left atrium - posterior
- SA node (45% of people)
What is the name for weeks 1-4 of pulmonary development?
Embryonic period
What pulmonary structures are developed during the embryonic period?
Larynx, trachea lung buds, bronchial buds
What is the name for weeks 5-17 of pulmonary development?
Pseudoglandular period
What pulmonary structures are developed during the pseudoglandular period?
Secondary bronchi and bronchopulmonary segments
What is the name for weeks 16-25 of pulmonary development?
Canalicular period
What pulmonary structures are developed during the canalicular period?
Terminal and respiratory bronchioles
What is the name for weeks 26+ of pulmonary development?
Terminal sac period
What pulmonary structures are developed during the terminal sac period?
Pulmonary alveoli and type II alveolar cells to produce surfactant
What is the action of the pulmonary system during birth?
Push fluid out and expand alveoli with the first few breaths
What pulmonary development occurs in years 0-4 of development?
Increase in number of alveoli and VC
