7.3 Waste disposal, reduction, and treatment Flashcards
how do lakes and rivers naturally clean themselves
plants other organisms and soil filter them and the bad stuff has places to settle
water management systems
systems used in many countries that are put in place in order to manage water waste
how are lakes and rivers self cleaning properties disrupted
ppl add csweage and storm water bad
where does water go when u flush and stuff
down pipes to join other dirty water to go to a sewage treatment plant
explain how sewage treatment plants clean water
primary sewage treatment: first they physically take out fat things like shit with progressively smaller web thingies
grit
small loose particles
why is the second stage of the sewage treatment needed (primary)
bc theres grit leftover from first
how does the second stage of physical sewage treatment work
the grit falls to the bottom as a sludge and the rest of the water moves on to secondary treatment
secondary sewage treatment aka
biological treatment
sludge
thick soft mud
secondary sewage treatment
the water from the primary is aerated so aerobic bacteria can break down further microbes and activated sludge is added to make more bacteria so sludge goes by and water moves to disinfection treatment
activated sludge
bacteria loaded sludge
why is secondary treatment aka biological
bc it uses organisms
wbiosolids
sludge that is heated and dried and be used in agriculture or stored for more secondary steps in future
addded sewage treatment step aka
disinfeciton
disinfection stage
UV light prevents bacteria from being able to multiply and chlorine and ozone kills further bacteria
tertiary sewage treatment
diff for all sewage treatment plants but is basically when another step is added like more biological treatments to clean the water more from nutrients like nigtogen and phosphorous
are tertiary sewage treatments common and why
no expensive
how many types of solid waste are there and what are they
2
industrial
municipal
industrial solid waste
waste that comes from factories mines and more
municipal solid waste
waste that comes from house or workplace
where do municipal solid waste get stored usually
landfills
types of landfills
open dump
sanitary dump
incinerator
open dump pros
big for lots of waste
inexpensive
keep waste away from homed
