4.4 Introduction to Sustainability Flashcards
sustainability
ability of earths systems to be maintain organisms and the health of the systems themself amongst environmental changes
how do humans disrupt sustainability
by depleting resources, using too many resources, etc.
environmental indicators
when the earth tells us that there is smth unsustainable in an ecosystem
examples of environmental indicators
dissolved O2 in areas, biological diversity, AMT of algea in resources
how is dissolved O2 an environmental indicators
If there is too little organisms will die bc photosynthesis
how is algea an environmental indicators
bc if there’s too much (eutrophication) aquatic organisms will die yk this bro we don’t gotta write it all out
how is biological diversity an environmental indicators
if its low then one organism is having too much advantage, etc.
indicator species
species that are known to survive only in super specific circumstances
how are indicator species used to determine sustainability
if they not there it means smth is wrong bc the thing they need (and usually everyone else does too - but they can still kinda live with less) is not there (or at least not enough)
maximum sustainable yield
the maximum amount of organisms you can take out and they’ll still be able to grow and reproduce and not go extinct :P
riparian zone
the area where terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems meet
is asphalt or concrete better for the environment why
neither they both suck bc theyre both not permeable
urban sprawl
the rapid, often unplanned expansion of urban areas
waterway
a river, canal, or other route for travel by water
