5.1 Intro to Energy Resources and Consumption Flashcards
in what ways can energy be categorized as
nonrenewable or renewable
energy sources
places where people get energy from to convert into something that is used to power everyday objects
nonrenewable energy source examples
nuclear energy and fossil fuels (coal, crude oil, natural gas)
are nonrenewable energy sources good or bad for the environment and why
bad bc they emit harmful pollutants into the environment
nonrenewable energy sources
sources that are consumed faster than they can be replaced bc they exist in a fixed amount
renewable energy sources
energy sources that are naturally replenished on a relatively short timescale
examples of renewable energy sources
solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal energy, and biomass fuels
are renewable energy sources good or bad for the environment and why
good bc they are sustainable and generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels
what is the most common source of energy around the world
fossil fuels
developed (in terms of countries – the definition)
generally used to describe countries that have relatively high levels of industrialization and income
across the globe, the use of fossil fuels is ______ (evenly/unevenly) distributed
unevenly
The smallest per capita fossil fuel use tends to occur in _____ (developing/developed) countries
developing
Global energy demand is ______ (increasing/decreasing) as countries become more industrialized and populations grow
increasing
People’s energy use depends largely on what
availability, price, and governmental regulations
what kind of energy is predicted to increase in use as nations develop
Low cost energies such as biofuel and passive solar energy
How does Canada use more energy than the US? I thought the US used some of the most energy.
I think it’s because the graph says, “Energy Use Per Person,” not, “Total Energy Used.” So apparently, even though the US has 400 million people and Canada has 40 million people, each individual in Canada uses more energy than their American counterparts. Maybe they need lots of heating
why might some areas have more energy use per person than others
heating
first law of thermodynamics
energy cannot be created or destroyed
nonrenewable energy sources usually come from where
the earth (like extracted)
how were fossil fuels formed
from the remains of ancient organisms that are buried and decomposed and exposed to heat and pressure that changes them into some voodoo magic fossil fuel
why is there a finite amount of fossil fuels
bc take forever to be made bc they are formed from dead organisms
how are fossil fuels extracted
mining
why is the process of extracting fossil fuels bad
bc they can pollute surrounding habitats
why is the use of fossil fuels bad for the environment
bc we use them by burning them and that releases too many greenhouse gasses into the environment
Is renewable energy use expected to grow more in the economically developed or developing nations of the world, and why?
Developing; low cost renewables like passive solar and biomass are expected to support the growing infrastructure in these regions.
