4.3 Effects of Land and Water use (2) Flashcards
urbanization
the creation and growth of cities and human settlements with higher population densities than rural areas
benefits of high population density
ppl closer together so more coordination and communication (health care, education, transportation, etc.)
negative impacts of high population density
lots of water and air pollution and strain on available resources
gray space
areas with pavements, buildings, etc.
green spaces
areas with vegetation
why are paved surfaces bad
bc water cant go into ground so there’s a lot of runoff which can lead to flash flooding
green roofs
roofs with plants on them that absorb water so it doesn’t create runoff and also cool down so less AC needed
rain gardens
gardens that are designed to let water into the ground to replenish aquifiers
permeable surfaces benefits
help aid groundwater recharge bc water goes into the aquifiers more
groundwater recharge
refilling aquifiers
saltwater intrusion
when humans pump up so much freshwater from aquifiers that saltwater from nearby saltwater places starts to deep into the aquifiers
photochemical smog
smoky pollution that is harmful to eyes and lungs
what creates photochemical smog
solar ultraviolet radiation on atmosphere polluted with hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen
greenhouse gas
gas that retains heat in the earth
examples of greenhouse gasses
carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane , nitrous oxide
ways to reduce photochemical smog
making cities taller instead of wider so ppl don’t have to live so far from work and drive (less CO2)+ making public transportation more affordable + making paths/bikinh + use clean energy
energy cogeneration
simultaneous production of electricity (or mechanical power) and useful thermal energy (heating and/or cooling) from a single source of energy –> so like you use what would be ur waste
