Battle of Vicksburg (1863)
Union gains control of Mississippi River and splits the confederacy in two. General Grant uses total war to destroy the South’s resources and infrastructure.
Battle of Gettysburg (1863)
The turning point of the Civil War in the east. This battle took place near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and the North won. Both sides suffered major losses but this battle ended General Lee’s attempt to invade the North.
Gettysburg Address (1863)
A speech given by Abraham Lincoln after the Battle of Gettysburg, in which he praised the bravery of Union soldiers and renewed his commitment to winning the Civil War; supported the ideals of self-government and human rights.
total War
Military strategy used by General Grant and the Union in which an army attacks not only enemy troops but the economic and civilian resources that support them.
General Sherman
Union general who captured Atlanta, Georgia, then marched through Georgia to the sea, burning and destroying everything on the way.
Thirteenth Amendment (1865)
Freed all slaves and abolished slavery.
John Wilkes Booth
Southerner who assassinated President Lincoln at Ford’s Theater five days after General Lee surrendered.
Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
Site where General Lee surrendered to General Grant and ending the Civil War in April 1865. Conditions of surrender were generous towards the Confederacy demonstrating the Union’s intention of reconciliation and to put the nation back together again.
