The southern states that seceded from the United States in 1861.
Attack on Fort Sumter (1861)
Federal fort in SC that was attached by Confederate forces. The Union surrendered the fort and the Civil War had begun.
blockade
Military tactic in which a navy prevents vessels from entering or leaving its enemy’s ports.
Robert E. Lee
Commander of the Confederate Army.
Acaconda Plan
Northern Civil War strategy to starve the South by blockading ports and controlling the Mississippi River.
Ulysses S. Grant
Union General who forced the surrender of Vicksburg and became commanding general of all Union armies. He forced General Lee to fight a series of decisive battles which led to the Confederate surrender. He believed in “total war”, a concept that mean destroys the enemies means of production and anything else that would help its war effort. He later became the 18th President of the U.S.
Border States
States bordering the North: Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri. They were slave states, but did not secede. West Virginia became a border state in 1863 when it broke away from Virginia.
Battle of the Ironclads
1862, a naval battle between the Confederate ship, the Virginia(Merrimack) and the Union ship, the Monitor, in Chesapeake Bay. Neither ship was victorious.
Battle of Antietam (1862)
Civil War battle fought in Maryland, the single bloodiest day in U.S. military history, and General Lee’s march North was stopped.
Emancipation Proclamation
Proclamation issued by Lincoln, freeing all slaves in areas still at war with the Union. Slaves in the border states and areas under Union control did not free slaves.
Homestead Act (1862)
Encouraged westward settlement by allowing heads of families to buy 160 acres of land for a small fee ($10-30); settlers were required to develop and remain on the land for five years. Over 400,000 families got land through this law.

Constitutional protection against unlawful imprisonment. This was suspended during the Civil War.
South/Confederacy advantages/disadvantages at the start of the war
Advantages- Most of the fighting will be in the south so they will know the land better and many experienced military leaders.
Disadvantages- Less people to fight, fewer factories/infrastructure like railroads and a smaller army and navy.
