11th President of the United States from Tennessee. He was committed to westward expansion, the U.S. annexed Texas, took over Oregon Territory during led the country during the Mexican War (1846-48).
Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo (1848)
Treaty signed by the U.S. and Mexico that officially ended the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. Mexico had to give up much of its northern territory to the U.S (Mexican Cession) and in exchange the U.S. gave Mexico $15 million.
California Gold Rush
Mass migration to California following the discovery of gold in 1848.
Gadsden Purchase
1853 purchase by the United States of southwestern lands from Mexico.

Oregon Treaty of 1846
After years of conflict over ownership of the Pacific Northwest, the U.S. and Britain. This established the boundary at 49° North Latitude, essentially splitting the Oregon Country down the middle.
