totalitarianism
Theory of government in which a single party or leader controls the economic, social and cultural lives of its people.
Munich Agreement (1938)
An agreement permitting the Nazi German annexation of Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland in order to preserve peace. Hitler later took over the rest of Czechoslovakia.
appeasement
A policy of making concessions to an aggressor in the hopes of avoiding war. Associated with Neville Chamberlain’s policy of making concessions to Adolf Hitler.
Benito Mussolini
Fascist dictator of Italy (1922-1943). He led Italy to conquer Ethiopia (1935), joined Germany in the Axis pact (1936), and allied Italy with Germany in World War II. He was overthrown in 1943 when the Allies invaded Italy.
Fascism
A political system headed by a dictator that calls for extreme nationalism, militarism, racism and no tolerance for opposition.

Didn’t allow the President to sell weapons, give loans or help any nation involved in a war.

Japan- Manchuria, Korea and parts of Eastern China.
Germany- Remilitarized the Rhineland, Austria, Sudetenland(Munich Agreement) and rest of Czechoslovakia

“Lighting war”- Fast-moving warfare used by Germany during the war that composed of planes, tanks and infantry.

Lend-Lease Act
1941 law that authorized the president to aid any nation whose defense he believed was vital to American security.
Non-Aggression Pact
1939-Secret agreement between German leader Hitler and Soviet Leader Stalin not to attack one another and to divide Poland.
Fall of France and Western Europe (1940)
Germany conquered Western Europe and the only major power left to fight Germany was G. Britain.
Battle of Britain
A series of battles between German and British air forces, fought over Britain in 1940-1941. Britain was not conquered and Hitler postponed the invasion of Britain.
Germany invades Soviet Union (1941)
Germany invaded the Soviet Union and made huge gains until the fall/winter stops German troops outside of Moscow. Germany is not fighting on another front.
Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor
December 7, 1941- This event drew the U.S. into World War Two.
Selective Service Act of 1940
Peacetime draft to increase the size of the military just incase the U.S. goes to war.
