Meat Inspection Act (1906)
Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle” heightened public awareness of the appalling and unsanitary conditions in the meat-packing industry. 1906 law that allowed the federal government to
inspect meat sold across state lines and required federal inspection of meat processing plants.
Pure Food and Drug Act (1906)
Law that regulated the food and patent medicine industries.
National Reclamation Act (1902)
Created to plan and develop irrigation projects.
Progressive Party (Bull Moose Party)
Formed by President Roosevelt before the in Election of 1912 after he failed to get the nomination for the Republican Party.
Theodore Roosevelt
26th president, known for: conservationism, trust-busting, Hepburn Act, safe food regulations, “Square Deal,” Panama Canal, Great White Fleet, Nobel Peace Prize for negotiation of peace in Russo-Japanese War.
William Howard Taft
27th president of the U.S.; he angered progressives by moving cautiously toward reforms. He lost Roosevelt’s support and was defeated for a second term.
Woodrow Wilson
28th president of the United States, known for World War I leadership, created Federal Reserve, Federal Trade Commission, Clayton Antitrust Act, progressive income tax, lower tariffs, women’s suffrage (reluctantly), Treaty of Versailles. He wanted his Fourteen Points post-war plan with its League of Nations (but failed to win U.S. ratification) and won Nobel Peace Prize.
Sixteenth Amendment
The constitutional amendment adopted in 1913 that permitted Congress to levy an income tax.
Federal Reserve Act
A 1913 law that set up a system of federal banks and gave government the power to control the money supply.
Federal Trade Commission Act (1914)
Established the Federal Trade Commission to monitor business practices, false advertising, and dishonest labeling.
