Selective Service Act of 1917
Law passed by Congress in 1917 that required all men from ages 21 to 30 to register for the military draft.
Espionage Act of 1917
Law which punished people for aiding the enemy or refusing military duty during WWI.
conscientious objector
Person who refuses to enter the military or bear arms due to moral or religious reasons.
Schenck v. United States
A 1919 decision upholding the conviction of a socialist who had urged young men to resist the draft during World War I. Justice Holmes declared that government can limit speech if the speech provokes a “clear and present danger” of substantive evils.
War Industries Board
Agency established during WWI to increase efficiency & discourage waste in war-related industries.
Sedition Act of 1918
Wartime law that prohibited any words or behavior that might promote resistance to the United States or help in the cause of its enemies.
Self-determination
Concept that ethnic groups have the right to govern themselves.
League of Nations (1919)
Part of Woodrow Wilson’s plan for lasting peace, it was the first international organization founded in to promote world peace and cooperation but was weakened when the U.S. refused to join. The organization failed to stop aggression by Italy, Japan, and Germany in the 1930s, but laid the foundation for the creation of the UN after WWII.
reparations
As part of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was ordered to pay fines to the Allies to repay the costs of the war.
Fourteen Points
A series of proposals in which U.S. president Woodrow Wilson outlined a plan for achieving a lasting peace after World War I. These included ending secret alliances, self-determination for ethnic groups, free trade, ending the arms race(militarism), redrawing borders in Europe and creating a League of Nations.
Treaty of Versailles
Treaty that ended WW I. It blamed Germany for WW I and handed down harsh punishments. Reparations, loss of colonies, shrinking of Germany, war-guilt clause, no submarines, small army, no navy and a demilitarized zone(Rhineland) between Germany and France.
Red Scare (1919-1920)
Brief period of mass anti-communist paranoia in the U.S., during which a number of laws were passed that often violated the right to free speech.
Influenza Pandemic
1918 global outbreak of influenza, a highly contagious viral infection, killing as many as 30 million people worldwide.
