Muckrakers
Journalists who attempted to find corruption or wrongdoing in industries and expose it to the public.
Jacob Riis
Early 1900’s muckraker who exposed social and political evils in the U.S. with his novel “How The Other Half Lives”; exposed the poor conditions of the poor tenements in NYC.
settlement houses
Community centers located in the slums and near tenements that gave aid to the poor, especially immigrants.
Jane Addams
The founder of Hull House, which provided English lessons for immigrants, daycares, and child care classes.
Initiative
A procedure by which voters can propose a law or a constitutional amendment.
Referendum
A state-level method of direct legislation that gives voters a chance to approve or disapprove proposed legislation or a proposed constitutional amendment.
Recall
A procedure for submitting to popular vote the removal of officials from office before the end of their term.
Upton Sinclair
Muckraker who shocked the nation when he published The Jungle, a novel that revealed gruesome details about the meat packing industry in Chicago.
Seventeenth Amendment (1913)
Direct election of senators by the voters instead of their election by state legislatures.

Triangle Shirtwaist Fire (1911)
A New York City fire broke out killing 146 workers who were locked in a sweatshop.
Temperance Movement
An organized campaign to eliminate alcohol consumption.
Margaret Sanger
Nurse who campaigned for birth control and women could improve their lives if they had fewer children. She was often jailed for her views.
Nineteenth Amendment (1920)
Gave women the right to vote in all elections.
Lincoln Steffens
Early muckraker who exposed the political corruption in many American cities with the book “The Shame of the Cities.”
Susan B. Anthony
An American social reformer and feminist who played a pivotal role in the women’s suffrage movement. She was arrested in 1872 when trying to vote.
