Q

Mucus of Epithelial Origin

Pathological

A

Hypersecretion:
* Mucocele→ Mucus accumulation, outlet obstruction.
* Mucinous tumors → Increased production.
* Equine RAO

Infection Response:
* Swine dysentery → Mucus overstimulation → Necrotic mucosa.

Mucoid enteropathy→ Intestinal imbalance.

Q

Mucus of Connective Tissue Origin

Pathological Changes:

A

Increased Production:
* Hypothyroidism → Hyaluronic acid accumulation → Myxedema.

  • Hyperestrogenism (e.g., mycotoxin
    related) → Estrogen syndrome in piglets.
  • Shar-Pei Mucinosis → Excess mucin in skin.

Decreased Degradation:
* Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS)→ Mucus accumulation.

  • Myxomatosis (rabbits)→ Tumor-like nodules.
