- Maintain records of all repairs made to ground ladders
- Send a copy of the repair record to Truck 3 Captain whenever a ground ladder is repaired
The Fire Garage Supervisor
Who shall, at the end of each calendar year, forward to the Safety
Division the FIR 2570 0001’s for that year.
Company Captains
Who shall ensure that:
- Ground ladders are inspected monthly and after each use
- The findings of those inspections are documented on FIR 2570 0001, Company Level Ground Ladder Inspection Log
Company Officers
Who shall
- Remain fully cognizant of the possibility that a ground ladder undergoing service testing may suddenly and dramatically fail
- Take all personal safety precautions possible to protect themselves during ground ladder service testing

When shall ground ladders be inspected?
- All ground ladders regardless of type shall be visually inspected thoroughly after each use in accordance with 6.1. (“Use” of a ground ladder includes emergency operations and training evolutions.)
- In addition, an inspection shall be conducted
a. Anytime the ladder is suspected of being unsafe
b. After a ladder has been subjected to overloading, impact loading, or unusual conditions of use
c. During monthly cleaning
The findings of these inspections, including needed repairs, shall be recorded by:
company personnel on FIR 2570 0001, Company Level Ground Ladder Log.
All ground ladders shall be service tested when?
at least annually and after
a. The ladder has been exposed to heat
b. The ladder has been subjected to overloading, impact loading, or unusual conditions of use
c. Any deficiencies have been repaired, unless the repair was limited to halyard replacement.
How are metal ground ladders tested?
Metal ground ladders shall be tested in accordance with the strength service testing procedures of the 1984 edition of NFPA 1932.
a. Extension ladders that were constructed prior to the adoption of the 1984 edition of NFPA 1931, may, when tested in accordance with WAC 296-305-06005, be tested with a minimum test load of 400 pounds and a preload of 300 pounds.
b. Ladders tested under the above exception shall be used with a maximum load limit of 500 pounds distributed or 400 pounds concentrated. Ladders shall be tested in the configuration that they are used.
c. Extension ladders constructed in 1984 and later shall be tested with a preload of 350 pounds and a test load of 500 pounds.
On ladder inspections, check the following:
a. Rungs for welds, damage or weakness caused by overloading or bumping against other objects, looseness and cracks, etc.
b. Metal Beams for condition of welds, rivets, and bolts, signs of strain or fatigue deformation from heat or overloading.
c. Fiberglass Beams for cracks, gouges, and splintering.
d. Bolts and rivets for tightness.
e. Butt spurs for excessive wear or other defects.
f. Halyards (ropes and cables) for signs of fraying, unraveling, cuts, broken strands or deterioration.
f. Heat sensor for expiration date and changes indicating heat exposure.
g. Pulleys and dogs for breakage, wear, lubrication, and proper movement of springs.
